IKEA of Sweden 1998-2006 (8 years)

1998 – 2003 IKEA, general manager Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh (4 years)

After one year of preparation in Sweden and Singapore it became my task to build up the recently started Vietnam purchasing/production organisation to a professional IKEA trading entity. Working together with industrial counterparts in different sectors, metal, plastics, wood, natural fibres and ceramics, it was the mission to prepare Vietnam for the strong competition of other Asian producers like China and Thailand.

The buying principle of IKEA is based on partnership with suppliers and a strong focus on the total value chain. Meaning also that when there are inefficiencies, like purchase of raw-material (wood, metal), IKEA steps in. Besides the clear business targets, one of the other challenges was to implement the IKEA IWAY of purchasing in Vietnam. In this all suppliers/producers had to work according IKEA standards for working conditions, environment and safety.
Working together with 110 co-workers, including 14 expatriates we realized a 500% growth and reached a turnover on store-level of 500 mln usdollar, becoming one of the largest exporters of Vietnam.

2003 – 2006 IKEA, Manager Purchase and coordination, Almhult Sweden (4 years)

Together with a team of global purchasers responsible for the Purchase & Coordination (PUCO) of all IKEA textiles globally, with a buying-value exceeding 700 mln euro annually.
Working in 24 countries. Strategic position whereby new ways of purchasing and co-operation with producers where implemented. Value-chain management resulted in price-reductions in a world market of increasing raw materials prices.
In co-operation with the main producers raw-material positions were taken to optimize the results.
Besides this main task in strategic buying, the implementation of IWAY purchasing principles was a demanding task in textiles as well. Especially working in countries like India and Bangladesh where we were supported by child labour organization and different NGO’s.

2006-2007 Amtrada,Commodity Trade, Int. Business Development (2 years)

Combining the expertise in strategic buying, value-chain management and commodity trading I was responsible for the (re-) positioning of the purchasing strategy and investments in new facilities. This resulted in an investment in South-East Asia (coffee-factory), co-investment in Ecuador (cocoa) and a start up in Brazil. (coffee)

Since 2008 - 2012 Eneco Energy Trade , alternative energy department (4 years)

Responsible for the development of Eneco’s biomass strategy and implementation of it. In this it was my first task to determine the right position for Eneco in the total value-chain of woody biomass (plantation, sawmills, pelletizers, trading) . Supported by a team of traders, logistic support, environmental specialist, risk-management the strategy was developed. Resulting in a close co-operation with owners of plantations in South – America and Canada, outsourcing of in-house developed pelletizer initiative (Vietnam) , agency agreements with several woodchip-producers and sales contracts with major Japanese trading houses (pending). Biomass energy plant in Delfzijl will be completed in 2013.
Because of Eneco’s market position as one of the cleanest energy-producers in Europe the sustainability, certification and environmental responsibilities are of major importance to all the directions and decisions.
