Work Experience

CEO (directeur général) (Time spent : 9 months 01/2011 – 9/2011)

-Client : Belgian group of companies active in trade of raw materials and recycling. They acquired 4 years ago a group of 3 companies in Liège active in Belgian Blue Stone production. Activity spread over 4 quarries to extract blue stone and two production centres to produce related (semi-) finished products to the building industry (B2B). (56 FTE’s – 4.000.000 € TO)

-Objective : After 4 years of losses, to clearly identify the problems in this extremely complex activity, come with an industrial plan to save the business. To add to the complexity : Sogepa (Walloon Participation Company) with a 30% share in the company, a very strong FGTB (Union) representation with strong links to the Walloon Government and finally the previous owner with strong links to local authorities still in the board and daily present.

-Scope : daily general management with immediate cut on costs and rationalize excesses leading to waste of resources. In the meantime get to know the business and the technical functioning and come with an industrial and financial plan.

-Result : I introduced an ERP system, replaced the heads of accountancy and HR. Reduced the workforce with 9 people (just below law Renault). I realised a 20 % saving on costs since April. Early august I delivered an industrial plan based on 5 axes for change : re-define core business & mission, governance and management, restructuring of Human Resources, investments, sales & marketing.



Consultant (Time spent : 1 week in Belgium & 2 weeks in China (12/2010)

-Client : A Belgian group of high-end multi-brand lighting companies with an assembly factory in China and worldwide sales. (100 FTE + 40 FTE’s in China – 4.700.000 € TO)

-Objective : Analyse and diagnose the problematic situation in the Chinese factory The audit had to result in an objective and practical tool – not a conceptual study - with concrete improvement projects/propositions up to the size of the company.

-Scope : the entire supply chain : design, engineering, tooling, sourcing, procurement, QA, painting/plating, assembly, packaging, warehousing, JIT. In this respect all order/goods/document flows should be studied but also communication tools, reporting policies and IT. Finally I was asked to evaluate human resources and come with recommendations if changes should be required.

-Result : Preliminary advise : start the change process in the HQ cy : organogram, core business, make or buy, R&D, IT, culture. Next I delivered an extensive practical guide to change procedures & organisation for each individual department. I also reviewed legal/financial/HR aspects (Style Due Dilligence Report). Finally I offered a SWOT analysis on relocation and management swap in China. In about 15 days, I offered a comprehensive analysis and practical tool to address the problematic areas.




Philips Consumer Luminaires (Kontich - 1996 to 30/6/2009)

In 1996 I started working at the family owned lighting group Massive NV as General Manager of Massive Production & Trade, a business unit taking care of all production (JV-factory & sourcing) in China.

In 2003 the family owners sold the group to CVC (private equity). CVC founded the HQ company “Partners in Lighting International NV” on top of the existing structure. I was promoted to the group HQ Company as “Manager Far East Interests” after my strategic business plan for China was approved by CVC/PLI.

At the end of 2006 Philips acquired Partners in Lighting International.
Realised projects:
 Post Merger Integration into Philips of former entities of Massive/Partners in Lighting International in China and HK including HR, SAP, Finance, Logistics.
 Change Massive China Ltd into Philips Consumer Luminaires Ltd and expand from an organisation sourcing components & finished products in China for EU market into a regional HQ for APAC, India, Latam responsible for product development, R&D, QA, logistics and sourcing in China for worldwide markets.
 Set up a logistic platform in China including regional warehousing and logistic flows for Apac (Asia Pacific), India, Latam (Latin America) and EU.
 Buy land, build a factory and set up production plant.
 Establish a sourcing office in China.
 Set up/relocate/liquidate several companies (all existing legal forms as JV, RO, WFOE, FICE….) in China and HK.
 Reduce the supply base and set up a Vendor Management system for all Chinese and Italian suppliers.
 Study smart assembly in Brazil/Mexico & audit factories of potential M&A targets.
 Comparative study on the best location worldwide to set up a 3rd factory.
 Market study on setting up a chain of big surface retail shops in China.
 Market study in Australia on the best strategic approach.

Tasks:
 All corporate functions as legal, finance, fiscal, social, HR, real estate, compliance & sustainability, governmental relations for all China/HK entities.
 Define and implement strategy and organization in APAC.
 Design order/invoice/goods flows, including transfer pricing and overall responsible for logistics including sea freight.
 Overall responsible for vendor management including sourcing of new suppliers and new products with continuous benchmarking and cost down.
 Look after JV factory : product development, quality assurance, production, vendor management, delivery performance, budget & financial reporting but also legal aspects of JV-relation and processing factory in China.
 Specifically for Philips Consumer Luminaires in Shenzhen, take care of the day to day general management. Started with 9 people in 2003, it developed to 60 people and 6 managers reporting to me : Finance, HR, Purchase, Logistics, Product development and QA.
