Work Experience

2001-now: Consultant with Forest Returns BV in Utrecht, Netherlands, responsible for new sales contacts.
1997-2001: Various consultancies: Such as services for investors in Costa Rica, Ghana, Brazil and Poland, but also helping small and medium sized companies to organize their computer systems and organization.
Futhermore: Freelance tour- and tourist guide for Dutch and American travelers visiting Costa Rica
1996-97: Managing owner of a specialized sawmill for teak wood timber.
Experience: Industrial, directing 20 operators, quality control, buying logs, international sales of timber. Crisis management because of natural disasters in the area of the mill (3 big floods). No possibility to produce against market price. Lack of funds to continue. Closing the operation. Back to basics.
1993-95: Managing partner of two teak plantation projects for investments in Costa Rica.
Developing the concept for these projects. Buying the farms, developed the promotional campaign with ads and brochures and started the fund raising, including personal sales.
With help of a local forestry engineer I started in Costa Rica the preparations for the plantations.
Mid 1993 I made an alliance with a Dutch partner. He bought 50% of my shares of the company and I was able to settle myself in Costa Rica in charge for the further development and daily management of these projects. My partner was in charge for the sales of the participations for these projects in the Netherlands and the other European countries.
With this big move in my career I received a lot more experience in various fields. Managing a big agro-operation with on the top more then 60 men on the payroll and various contractors for building houses, roads, etc. Working in a Latin American country with his own characteristics, working in the field far from the civilized world. With a lot of legal work and control of big funds. Planning and controlling the work. Receiving clients and showing them around on the farms and other parts of Costa Rica.
All the special problems with plantation forestry and saving natural woods and other agricultural problems. Together with research for the best locations for new projects and negotiations with local farm owners and big European funds.
Finally I sold my shares to my Dutch partner. I needed to look for a new project and bought an existing sawmill.
1991-93: Owner and general manager of a full services agency for advertising, public relations and marketing. Various computer clients, construction companies and real estate agencies. Besides advertising print campaigns, direct mail, etc. we also developed 3 yearly directories for trade with the new Russian Republics and the real estate market. Total budgets US$ 15 mil., 4 men on the payroll.
1987-91: Marketing Communications manager with Bull Computers responsible for the Dutch market. Bull is an international mainframe, minicomputer and PC supplier with a strong position in the Dutch and European markets. Reporting to the local general manager and the French headquarters. Reorganization of the whole department with US $ 5 million budget for advertising, promotions, trade fairs, documentation and house magazines. Responsible for 5 employees. Results: A better-known place in the market, a better control of the budget and more value for the money.
1979-86: Owner and general director of a full-services agency for advertising and marketing. Various big consumer and B-to-B clients for whom I realized local and international marketing communications programs including advertising, promotions and sales promotions. Budgets US $ 10 million. Directed 4 assistants, freelancers for art and copy, print productions, TV productions, etc.
1971-79: Marketing manager for the advertising market of a well-known Dutch publisher: Kluwer Publiekstijdschriften BV. Seven monthlies, with a turnover of US $ 10 million only in advertising’s and 14 employees. Starting with no advertising services at all, I organized the whole market technical problem and the publishing technical problem that ended in a well-known position in the advertising market and the mentioned results. Directed 14 employees for sales, administration and technical assistance. Reporting to the CEO and 4 business unit managers.


Education

After general high school (Netherlands 1963) finished studies on a specialized evening university in Marketing, Advertising and Media and general economics on MBA level (Netherlands 1975). After these studies I practiced my knowledge during more then 10 years as a professor for Marketing and Advertising with various private universities in the Netherlands in evening classes.
Military services: 1963 - 1965: Sergeant Instructor Infantry


Skills

More then average knowledge of personal computer tools. DOS, Windows 9x, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Netscape, Eudora. Able to understand uses and technology of any software product. Able to learn functions, installations and appropriate application of new products.

Other

With an extensive management background in marketing, sales, marketing-communications, public relations and investors relations in the Netherlands I decided in 1993 to make a big change in my career. I moved to Costa Rica and initiated and realized a big reforestation project with teak trees for Dutch investors. After the planting was done I sold my shares to my associated partner and I bought a sawmill to sell teak wood timber. That operation did not work like I expected and I had to close it. After that, with a more than average knowledge of Costa Rica, I worked as a consultant for investors and as freelance guide for Dutch tourists. Since September 2001 I returned to the Netherlands to see my family and find a new challenge.

I am still highly motivated to start in a new professional surrounding where I can use all my skills:
