High Plains establishes contact with the technology originators and then undertakes the initial technology evaluation and business plan development. High Plains acts as the entrepreneur, leading the team, including the technologists, and undertaking all critical roles during the new company's establishment including:
· Evaluating and acquiring the key intellectual property
· Developing and producing the business plan and communicating it to key stakeholders
· Performing all the company's regular day to day functions and operations
· Recruiting operational and managerial staff, occasionally from the original development team
· Developing and building the business and building momentum during early stages, including negotiation of key contracts
· Recruiting key senior leaders including CEO, Chairman, non-exec directors and scientific advisors
· Raising venture capital funding to ensure necessary funding is in place for the early stage of development and that a solid capital structure is in place
· Managing the transition/transfer of responsibility over to the new management team.

Proteometry is a start-up company being spun out of the University of Warwick's Institute of Mass Spectrometry, part of the Chemistry Department. The Institute's Director along with his senior staff has exceptional experience in proteomic research and the development and application of mass spectrometry technology to bioscience. I was asked to form the company and take the lead role in its early growth and development, including:
· raising initial venture capital funding.
· evaluation of the marketplace, intellectual property and organisational requirements.
· developing and implementing the business plan
· active hands-on management and leadership for the technical team during the establishment and growth phase.
· negotiating and structuring all legal agreements and establishment of the company and shareholder arrangements.
· recruiting the long-run management team including the CEO, Chairman and directors as well as technical and operational staff.

IIT Limited (start-up medical devices company), Manchester, UK
Founder & Chairman (ex CEO)

IIT is developing a minimally invasive continuous glucose monitor for the worldwide diabetes market based on proprietary technology from Manchester University. Acting as the entrepreneur, High Plains provided the core staff and leadership necessary to form the company and develop it into a highly successful young company. Our role included:
· providing initial seed funding during the evaluation stage.
· evaluation of the marketplace, intellectual property and organisational requirements.
· management and staffing necessary to develop the business plan.
· legal agreements and establishment of the company and shareholder arrangements.
· negotiating and closing 4 funding rounds including the Wellcome Trust and Schroder Ventures for a total of £5 million in committed funds have been concluded. One final round of £6 million with an expected pre-money valuation of £30 million is set for the end of 2002.
· Recruiting a CEO, Chairman and directors as well as technical and operational staff.With funding in place and a fully constituted board of directors, advisory board and organisation, I wound back my involvement in mid-2001 to strategic advisory, corporate finance and mentoring.

I acquired and operated several companies from 1997 to 2001. Group turnover reached approximately £1.5 million with 40 staff in 4 locations. Cashflow from operations was used to fund High Plains' start-up activities leading up to the successful establishment of IIT Limited. The companies included:
· a precision engineering business manufacturing and supplying components to the medical equipment industry for use in cancer treatment equipment.
· a facilities maintenance and HVAC-R engineering services company.
· a small specialist components manufacturer and systems design engineering firm focusing on productivity enhancements for the printing industry.

Project manager and team member involved in several major assignments to Board and Ministerial level through Europe including:
· France: New high tech consumer medical optical/ophthalmic product roll-out strategy for a major US manufacturer.
· Poland: 3-person project team reporting to Poland's Minister of Transport restructuring the Polish National Railways on a World Bank funded assignment. Prepared recommendations on financing, organisational, legislative frameworks and contractual arrangements for local and long distance passenger rail services, rail access fees, organisational, contractual and legislative structures.
· UK: Reporting to the Minister of Transport and BR Board of Directors evaluating the commercial viability and potential for divestiture or restructuring of a UK rail freight company.
· Germany: Managed an international diversification and acquisition strategy assignment reporting to the Chairman of a major German industrial conglomerate across 6 major machinery manufacturing sectors: Medical, Food, Plastic, Gear cutting, Printing and Wood working
· Germany: Evaluated and analysed the operating expense cost category of a large multi-national consumer goods manufacturer for the European Board of Directors.
