Turned company around into profitability. Managed £3m of Government contracts for provision of careers guidance services to young people and £2m of other income. Board member of two Connexions Partnerships and two sister companies.

Chief Executive – Careers Services National Association 1999-2001
First Chief Executive of the national body representing all 66 careers services companies in England delivering £237m of government contracts. Incorporated the Association and raised political and public profile. Acted as key link with primary agencies in the sector including UCAS, and the DfES.

Managing Director – VT Southern Careers Ltd, Hampshire 1996-1999
Established the company with a staff of 250; reduced budgeted costs by £1.2m in first year, increased turnover by 26% and annual profit by 280%. Also established sister company VT West Sussex Careers Ltd, combined turnover of two companies £10m with 19 sites servicing over 300 schools and colleges. Exploited overseas markets in Europe and established a delivery company in the UAE to service the Middle East markets in partnership with the Higher Colleges of Technology.


Project Manager – Support Projects Division (Vosper Thornycroft) 1994-1996
Led bid teams for Hampshire, Isle of Wight and West Sussex careers services winning contracts from the Department for Education and Employment with a total contract value in excess of £40m. Managed ship management contracts with an annual contract value c£3m for vessels engaged in Government and commercial research.

Management Planner and Quality Manager – HQ Bath (MoD) 1993-1994
Responsible for developing and monitoring business plans for the £150m budget department, employing 2,300 staff in 8 major bases in the UK and operating across NE European waters. Liaised with internal and external customers and other government departments. Introduced ISO 9000 and TQM across department.

Navigator – Worldwide 1975-1993
Professional navigator in various operational and management positions including:
Marine Services Office (MOD) based in Devonport, Gibraltar and Bath
French-speaking Liaison Officer with Trinity House
Lieutenant - Royal Naval Reserve
Navigator - Cunard Steam-ship Company
