Organisational performance and change

Work Experience

Work Chronology
I have usually taken new roles, permanent, interim or as a consultant, that arise from some form of organisational change and that require me to design and implement new people management or administrative systems and processes – especially across multiple countries, sites and cultures.

4/2001 – 1/2004 Wilson Learning Europa
(Senior Consultant)
Based in Beaconsfield, U.K, I designed, sold and implemented learning and assessment solutions to improve company performance. I managed a global multimillion dollar learning program across 30 months as part of the post-merger integration and change efforts within Hewlett Packard, and designed an assessment centre for Bourne Leisure’s new call centre. I was awarded the Sales Quota Achiever of the Year in 2002/3 and topped the revenue list each year I was with Wilson Learning Europa.

3/2000 – 4/2001 Ernst and Young
(Executive Consultant)
Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, designing and selling and delivering large scale organisational change and people effectiveness projects across several countries and in both private and public sectors. I also had to manage teams of principal consultants and contractors to deliver the solutions. I left once the EY – Cap Gemini merger failed in SA and the consultancy was sold and resold to the highest bidders. My largest individual win was the £2.2m restructure of the Namibian Power company.

11/1998 – 1/2001 LONRHO Africa
(Group Human Resources Manager)
Based in Harare, Zimbabwe, operating at Board level to help restructure, reskill and realign this recently de-merged, large and diverse group of 96 companies employing 28 000 people in 96 companies across 16 countries in EMEA. This covered the usual full range of HR activities including systems, training and succession planning of managers, executive and expatriate compensation, pension fund management and management of the head office IT function as well. As the Zimbabwean economy collapsed the Head Office was relocated to Nairobi and I declined a transfer. We used a home grown HRIS, and I also acted as a troubleshooter for the Board.

11/1997 – 11/1998 NCR Corporation
(Interim role as HR Director: sub-Saharan Africa)
Based in Harare, Zimbabwe and covering 9 countries in EMEA. This role was designed to help NCR make the transition to solution selling, to restructure and rightsize the company and to redesign the HR and Learning systems and processes to fit. We rolled out PeopleSoft HR across the region too, and used satellite-TV and e-learning tools to reskill the employees. The main focus was on a customer service upgrade and teaching technicians to operate as consultants.
.
1/1996 – 11/1997 Price Waterhouse
(Head ; Organisational Change Unit)
Based in Harare, Zimbabwe, designing and selling and delivering large scale organisational change and OD interventions across 5 countries to both private and public sectors. I managed a small team of consultants and contractors, and was commended by USAID for my management of a critical project with the Zimbabwe Government.

9/1993 – 1/1996 Durban Electricity
(Senior Human Resources Officer)
Based in Durban, South Africa and operating in local government as a specialist in change and performance management, diversity/AA/EEO, assessment, HRIS, psychometrics and job analysis. During this time I was trained in realignment of public services, completing certificates in mentoring and change management through a local university that was involved in the reshaping of local government in Durban. We used localised HRIS then shifted to MINCOM’s MIMS system.

6/1992 – 9/1993 Konrad Adenauer Foundation
(Contract role as Project Manager)
Based in Durban, this project was funded by the Christian Democratic party from Germany and involved the design and commissioning of a new political training institute designed to train new black South African political leaders from grass roots to Cabinet level in leadership and management and economics, and running it until an affirmative action director could be recruited.

1991-1992 COIN Security Group
(Group Human Resources Manager)
Based in Pretoria, South Africa and tasked with the design and implementation of a full control system for the HR and Training functions across 4 countries for this company employing 4500 people. I reported to the Chairman of the Board.

1988 – 1990 Military Psychological Institute
(Captain and Project Manager)
Based in Pretoria, South Africa and conducting internal OD interventions in performance, assessment and selection, training and development in the Defence Force. This is the HR systems think tank of the SADF, and I joined to complete my internship obligations as a psychologist.
