IT operations and project manager

Work Experience

Experience:
2004 – To date
On retirement I started a one-man (for fun) company developing, writing, producing and marketing books on building electric guitars . This is very much a niche market and yields a break even result, which is ok as it pays for the costs. It has kept me abreast of developments on Internet and general ICT developments (as a one-man company you are your own ICT department amongst others). Six books are on the market with a seventh work in progress – each book is produced in English and in Dutch.

2000 - 2004
Business interface manager, i.e. local rep for the centralized IT services (a solo activity).
Point of contact in the local operating company for the centralized services. These services were managed from Houston, but took increasingly place in KL. Also I was the interface between the operating company and remaining local services (which fell under the central IT club). This involved financial issues, escalated problem management and new services. Not unimportantly it honed political skills, as there is always a healthy amount of distrust and resistance between local and centralized, between outsourcing and the people whose jobs are outsourced.
Heading the Y2K project for the local infrastructure.
PC and server security (antivirus) responsibilities
Participate in the group wide rollout of SAP R3 (project management and accounting modules)
Analyzing accounting and asset registration discrepancies in the Active Directory.

1997 – 1999
Head of the infrastructure operation (service delivery) group, average 160 staff.
Activities embracing ITIL based service delivery for all PC and server infrastructure, 3000 desktops, 150Unix servers, some 100 NT servers), LANs and regional WAN for the production sites. HR, financial reporting/planning, interface with the project delivery groups (local and central). Managing the reduction of the local operations service due to outsourcing and centralization. Managing the HR issues associated with severe staff reductions. Building and maintaining the interfaces with the new central services (e.g. Helpdesks in Kuala Lumpur).

1992 - 1996
Infrastructure planning and development and projects for a large (3000+ employee) company in the oil and gas industry in the northern part of the Netherlands.
Planning and rolling out projects embracing implementation of new LANs and regional networks, NT and UNIX server and client rationalizations. Developing and rolling out new email services, replacing mainframe based services (Profs) by distributed client server based infrastructures (X.400 and later MSExchange technology). Methodology based on PMBOK and Prince II.
My development team was also responsible for problem analysis & solving where the operation team’s skills fell short (third line support).

1980 – 1991
Head of infrastructure planning and development in the central offices in The Hague w.r.t. to global services (teams ranging from 6 to 60 including vendor staff).
Planning and implementing a group wide message switching and telex system jointly with the central office in London, servicing 400 operating companies. Ready in 1984.

Planning and implementing the replacement of the message switching and a gigantic mix of email systems by a rationalized and standardized global email service. Review of the procedural and legal impact of such development. Supporting 400 operating companies and 140.000 users. Initially based on X.400 later migrating on Microsoft Exchange server technology.

1969 – 1980
Starting out as shift leader of the 24/7 global messaging services.

Around 1973 head of a small section infrastructure planning and development, rolling out various new technologies. This included assembly programming projects to modify the message switches and add functionality.
