JOB TITLE: TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

Operating from Birmingham and reporting to the UK CEO I held full responsibility for UK engineering operations covering product design and development, project industrialisation and group quality assurance functions for two manufacturing divisions.

The UK group held prime responsibility for the development of British Standard product ranges for worldwide commercialisation. To ensure products reply to market needs and defined performance criteria, significant project management was practised through the co-ordination of multi-skilled teams, from marketing studies through to industrialisation. Project management applied modern IT techniques to facilitate planning to demanding industrialisation programmes within strategic business plans. Capital expenditure schedules and project validation was part of my remit.

I was charged with the restructuring of the technical organisation and developed focused teams, with cross-functional responsibilities, working to defined “milestones” and financial objectives. Within a highly competitive market, significant emphasis is placed upon new product development with enhanced features and high standards of reliability at competitive costs.

Product families range from the high volume, commodity wall switches to the sophistication of automated building management systems incorporating leading edge software protocols. With the need to achieve demanding productivity gains substantial manufacturing resources included off-shore facilities. As such I gained significant experience in the relocation of manufacturing disciplines to the far east

Manufacturing technologies cover plastic injection moulded components, automated assembly, metal fabrication processes and electronic pcb assembly and test.

1985 – 1998: JOB TITLE: PRODUCTION DIRECTOR

Based in Milton Keynes and reporting to the UK CEO I held full site responsibility for all manufacturing operations. Production was conducted at two divisional sites located in Milton Keynes and Wolverhampton.

The Milton Keynes factory operated a 3-shift, continuous operation comprising a workforce of 150 employees. Production activities included automated production processes, integrated into a full manufacturing cycle from raw material to finished product. Cell manufacturing and flow line assembly techniques were practised, reflecting the need for small batch and continuous volume production. The Wolverhampton operation was predominantly the design and manufacture of electronic lighting control systems and emergency lighting product ranges with a staff of 40 employees.

Product development, quality, industrial engineering, site services, purchasing and materials control functions reported to my office. Major areas of change included the development of teams to introduce new working practices associated with productivity related capital investment programmes and industrial engineering projects.

A key task was the introduction of modern, computerised MRP2 procedures to improve inventory management, scheduling and materials procurement. Products were designed and manufactured within an ISO 9000 environment to recognised British Standards. Great emphasis was placed upon achieving high product quality and reliability, thereby assuring good customer service.

Forming part of a multinational company, comprehensive budgetary control and group reporting procedures are carried out in close liaison with the Financial Controller. My inter-group responsibilities have given considerable experience in operating within a major international corporation at executive level.
