Fellow of the Institute of Public Relations and its President in 1987. Experience mainly in public sector and not-for-profit organisations. Now practising as a dedicated interim executive.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

FOR THE FARMING INDUSTRY (NFU)
· Developed the argument that farmers should be financially supported by Government and EC because they were needed to look after the countryside even if they had to be paid to do that rather than produce surplus food. Set-aside payments for not farming were the result.
· Protected farmers from a threat that polluter pays principle would be applied to use of nitrogen fertiliser. Showed that Government had encouraged used of fertilisers during and after the war.
FOR THE NUCLEAR ENERGY INDUSTRY
· Developed the argument that nuclear electricity generation was environmentally beneficial because it supplied a third of our electricity without producing greenhouse gases or contributing to acid rain. If all that electricity has to be generated from fossil fuels what would the effect be on the environment?
· Persuaded nuclear chiefs that they should abandon the search to be loved by the public. The only issue was public acceptance of a need for nuclear power even though they were afraid of it. The case that nuclear is the fuel of the future, and does not produce greenhouse gases, was created to encourage acceptance.
FOR THE WATER SUPPLY INDUSTRY
· Demonstrated public willingness to pay more for high quality water by showing that they were already spending large sums on buying bottled water of lower quality than tap water.
· Threatened to reveal that government standards for quality of water would lead to mass abstention from consumption because they ignored the aesthetic qualities of taste, clarity and freedom of odour, which customers expected.
FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT
· Solved the problem of how to maintain regular contact with ratepayers by introducing first council newspaper distributed door-to-door by post office.
· Fought off threat to increasing use of central government powers. On behalf of Association of Metropolitan Authorities devised and managed the first ever professional keep it local advertising campaign by local government.
FOR THE INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS
· Developed the new official UK definition of public relations practice as reputation management.
· Doubled membership by introducing entry by examination.
· Continue to lecture on its behalf about community relations.
FOR TRADE ASSOCIATIONS
· Wrote the standard definition of trade associations for the CBI Trade Association Forum.
· Acted as first ever Director General for two trade associations.
· Served on Council of Advertising Association
FOR THE MARKET RESEARCH INDUSTRY
(British Market Research Association)
Established a new trade association for the market research sector, helping to develop its corporate governance rules and its government relations capabilities. The role was on a part-time interim management contract basis (one year to Feb 2001) using an outsourced secretariat organisation.
FOR THE BUSINESS SUPPORT SECTOR
As an interim executive, handled external relations and employee communications for the Learning & Business Link Company in Kent, with the result that staff turnover was very small despite the organisation facing imminent split into several new bodies under government requirements.
FOR THE AMUSEMENTS SECTOR (BACTA)
· Successfully led negotiations with Home Office to introduce a new all-cash fruit machine worth millions of pounds to industry.
· Gave evidence on behalf of industry to Deregulation Committee of House of Commons.
· Persuaded Treasury not to raise license duty on new machines. Launched machine with a media blitz including appearing on BBC Today programme and the main television news. Subsequently achieved a 50% increase in the permitted cash prize. Cut the duty on machines at seaside arcades.
· Represented industry on television including Money Programme (on preparation for Euro) and Kilroy (on encouragement of gambling.)
· Introduced economic analysis by Henley Centre as a tool for winning arguments.
· Transformed view of leisure machinesÑand ameliorated tax threat from new governmentÑby effectively arguing that machines make an enormous social and economic contribution and are at the heart of BritainÕs leisure pursuits.
· Brought together all gambling-related trade associations to lobby more effectively as a federation, in preparation for government review of gambling legislation.
FOR THE TRAIN OPERATING COMPANIES
· Stepped into a gap at short notice while a new permanent communications director was recruited.
· Represented the train companies on national television news programmes within days of starting.
· Represented ATOC at meetings with government on rail recovery public relations.
