Related Experience

2001 - 2002: Worked as project manager for Philips Semiconductors and Adelante Technologies in DSP development. Development and verification of a DSP core and subsystem including code generation and debug tools was managed to completion under CMM. Development took place in 6 projects. Hardware design was done in VHDL and with Philips internal tools. During the process the department was spun out to an independent company (Adelante Technologies), which made it an interesting but turbulent work environment. During the spin out work continued. The team size was around 35 staff.

2000: Worked for Lucent as project manager for a number portability project in Belgium and took part in the proposal phase for expansion of the IP dial in network for KPN Telecom in the Netherlands.

1995 - 2000 Project manager Logica
Worked during the indicated period as project manager for Logica BV, Dutch daughter of Logica PLC a London based software house. During this period several projects were managed to completion to the satisfaction of the client. The larger projects were:

1. Gasunie, development and integration of graphical mapping system for the gas pipelines. > Euro 5 mill. Project was entered when severe budget overruns were imminent. Got the project back on track and delivered according to revised planning. A strict factory and site acceptance procedure was devised and carried out. A diversity of organizational, technical and contractual challenges were posed and solved during the project. Two subcontractors were involved and all hardware was delivered as part of the project.
2. MSD, a warehouse management system was developed and commissioned. > Euro 3 mill. Acted as commissioning and integration manager in preparing the installation on-site and managing the actual commissioning after FAT. Several hardware and software issues were resolved. One subcontractor and several hardware suppliers were involved.
3. Rail Infra Beheer (RIB, part of Dutch Railways). An audit was conducted on the traffic control system. This system did not function as required. Development processes and techniques used were researched. Subsequently research was done on an application architecture was for applications (also non-software) for the Dutch Railways with which a unified construction method from low security level to high abstract planning level applications could be possible. A provisional concept on the basis of Bellcore OSCA was presented.
4. Scania, implementation of a logistic system for the truck factory. Acted as interim manager for the computer department responsible for the system management. The department had a shortage of competent personnel. Restructuring and reorganizing the department and indicating how to continue was successfully completed. The management of the logistic system was outsourced.

Several smaller projects were managed, advised and audited (ISO 9000 internal audits).

1990 - 1995 Project manager AKZO (systems)
Worked during the indicated period as technical project manager for AKZO Systems (later AKZO Information Services) to develop and maintain several systems. These systems - described below - were used by AKZO for their clients or in their chemical plants. All systems used a variety of equipment such as electronic balances for weighing paint and telemetry devices to gather data from the plants. All systems were sized as roughly Euro 1 mill. exclusive hardware.

1. PICA was a system for gathering process data from chemical plants and was built from several modules. The modules communication, event handling and archiving (the real-time data gathering and storing modules) were designed and managed to completion. A real-time VAX with special software for data gathering was used.
2. A system for storing and retrieving the recipes for the car coatings AKZO delivered. There are roughly 20.000 different colors composed of many components. These colors need to be created in the body shops the moment a damaged car needs to be repaired. The tools that could do this consisted of a local PC, a balance and software. Acted as troubleshooting manager for the application with focus on the balance, which was supplied by a German manufacturer. The difficulties and complexities that go with a large company and a commercially very important application were challenging. Travels to Germany and the USA were frequent.

Membership on advisory groups for standardization and project management was taken on.

1984 - 1990 Freelancer/Programmer Freelancer/Campus Software
Worked shortly as a freelancer after finishing the studies and later as a programmer for a small company Campus Software in Wageningen. Among others a translation was made of a text processor. It ran on a PDP and was written in assembler and was translated to run on a PC. VAX assembler was translated to PC assembler mimicking RT-11 where required. Also a simulation compiler was (partly) written. This period can be described as the technical learning period.
