2003 – Present Head of Organisation and Change
Created role supporting new CEO in deriving competitive advantage from S&N’s scale. Transforming series of national businesses into an integrated international Group focused on brand development and driving top line growth.

Key Achievements:

 With Boston Consulting Group, designing effective group-wide organisation, reducing cost base by at least £20m via aggregation, best practice and removal of duplication.
 First-time introduction of Matrix Management. Instituting group-wide decision making and enhanced resource allocation.
 Driving of implementation plan mobilising the organisation and embedding new ways of working.
 Development of internal communication strategy to ensure clear and consistent understanding of changes and their objectives.

 As member of Scottish Courage Board contributed to the strategic and commercial development of the business.
 Development of a 3 year HR plan to re-orientate the function and support the business strategy. This included a plan to reduce functional costs by £750k.
 As part of senior Scottish & Newcastle Group HR team, participated in development of Group HR policies and standards.
 Resourcing of talent to fill key positions.
 Worked with Employee Relations Director to foster progressive employee relations policies and practices during a period of fundamental change.

Kwik-Fit recently acquired by Ford. Twenty-one businesses employing 12,000 people across Europe. Revenues £800m and operating profit £40m. Created Group HR Director role reporting to Chief Executive; dotted line reporting to Ford HR in Detroit.

Key Achievements:

 Board member of Kwik-Fit GB – supporting new Managing Director in establishing strong Board and clear strategy for the business.
 Post acquisition integration of UK business (Montinex) with 150 centres and employing 1,000 people – realised £2M in savings in 3 months.
 New processes for performance management, recruitment and selection (savings of £200k) and remuneration practices.
 Recruited Managing Directors for UK, Netherlands and Ireland
 Management development programme to support accelerated promotion to Centre Manager.


1998 – 2000 HEWDEN STUART PLC
Group Human Resources Director

FTSE 250 business employing 4,500 people in 350 locations. Revenues £300m, operating profit £30m. Leading equipment rental to industrial and construction sectors. Reporting to Chief Executive and member of Group Management Board.

Supporting new Chief Executive in modernising management practices, integrating autonomous businesses and reducing costs. Highly operationally focused role.

Key Achievements:

 Integration of 32 autonomous businesses into a single brand, including the development of consistent operating standards and business processes.
 Consolidation of 12 payroll units, saving £750k.
 Introduction of standard terms and conditions of employment including pension arrangements, grading structures and incentive schemes, facilitating day to day management and staff transfer.
 Improved people management through the introduction of development programmes, performance management, succession planning and recruitment practices.
